The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) and Saab announced an order on 1 July for a mobile short-range air-defence (MSHORAD) system with RBS 70 NG (New Generation) missiles for the Swedish Armed Forces. The order booked during the second quarter of 2025 is valued at approximately SEK1.5 billion (USD157 million).
Saab said the order includes equipment enabling the Swedish Armed Forces to integrate RBS 70 NG into an MSHORAD system in the future. A Saab spokesperson confirmed to Janes on 2 July that the RBS 70 NG launchers ordered are mobile fire units (MFUs), including the control unit for inside a vehicle to be chosen by the customer. When asked by Janes if Sweden plans to use a mobile radar unit (MRU) with a Giraffe 1X radar, the spokesperson said Saab anticipates that to be the case.
The FMV noted that RBS 70 NG features automatic target acquisition and a built-in night capability and is designed to counter unmanned aerial vehicles, aircraft, and missiles at a range up to 9 km, with the order aimed at strengthening brigade-level capabilities against aerial threats.
Deliveries are expected to begin in 2027, with the integration of the systems into existing Swedish Armed Forces units.
