Taiwan's National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST) unveiled a new anti-tactical ballistic missile system at the Taipei Aerospace & Defense Technology Exhibition (TADTE) 2025 held from 18 to 20 September.

NCSIST officials told Janes thatChiang-Kong has been designed as a mid-altitude missile defence system intended to intercept tactical ballistic missiles at an altitude of 70 km.

According to NCSIST, key elements of the interceptor include its semi-trailer-based launcher, which can carry four missiles in vertical-launch canisters; control centre; and active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar.

The system features an independent power supply for both missile and launcher during self-test and the launching process. The AESA radar, which is also developed by NCSIST, is capable of 360º search, tracking, classification, and target identification, and can guide the missiles to the interception point. The radarʼs detection range was not disclosed.

Once an incoming missile is detected and tracked, the radar locks onto the target and relays the information to the systemʼs command centre. Engagement commands are sent from the control centre to the launcher via wired or wireless links. The systemʼs engagement control system subsequently sends commands to the launcher to fire the interceptor.

Chiang-Kong is a hypersonic two-stage missile comprising a booster and kill vehicle, which uses inertial navigation with radar uplink corrections in mid-course, and is guided in the terminal phase by an active seeker. Janes assesses that the systemʼs missilesemploy steering fins during the flight, supported by thrust vectoring for manoeuvrability during the terminal phase.
