The US Department of State has approved the possible sale of the Javelin anti-tank guided weapon (ATGW) system and the Excalibur artillery projectile to India for a combined USD92.8 million.

The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) said on 20 November that the Javelin deal is estimated to be worth USD45.7 million and that the Excalibur deal would be worth USD47.1 million. DSCA said Congress has been notified about the potential Foreign Military Sale (FMS) programmes.

According to the DSCA, the proposed Javelin deal will include 100 FGM-148 Javelin rounds; one Javelin FGM-148 missile, and 25 Javelin Lightweight Command Launch Units (LwCLUs) or Javelin Block 1 CLUs, and other related elements of logistics and programme support.

The prime contractor is the Javelin Joint Venture (JJV), a company owned by RTX Corporation and Lockheed Martin.

The proposed Excalibur deal will include 216 M982A1 155 mm projectiles. Other items include ancillary items; portable electronic fire-control systems (PEFCSs) with improved platform integration kit (iPIK); primers; propellant charges; and additional related logistics and programme support elements. The prime contractor is RTX Corporation.

Once procured by India, the M982A1 Excalibur projectile would be the first guided 155 mm projectile operated by the country's military.

According to Lockheed Martin, Javelin is a medium-range, manportable, fire-and-forget, anti-tank guided missile system. It has a maximum range of 4 km and can be operated in top- and direct-attack modes.
