The US Department of State has approved a possible Foreign Military Sale (FMS) of FGM-148F Javelin anti-tank missiles and related logistics and programme support elements to Poland for an estimated cost of up to USD780 million, the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced in a press release on 18 September.
Warsaw has requested 2,506 FGM-148F Javelin missiles, 253 Javelin Lightweight Command Launch Units, missile simulation rounds, battery coolant units, tool kits, spares support, training, US government and contractor technical assistance, transportation, and other related logistics and programme support elements.
The DSCA said the proposed FMS would support US foreign policy and national security by improving the security of a NATO ally and thereby political and economic stability in Europe.
It added that the proposed sale would improve Poland's capability to meet current and future threats by upgrading its existing legacy Javelin Command Launch Units and increasing its defence inventory, thereby reinforcing its capability to protect Polish sovereign territory and improving its ability to meet NATO requirements. The proposed equipment and support will not alter the basic military balance in the region, according to the DSCA.
The prime contractors will be RTX and Lockheed Martin.
